24 Hours till Free Agency....$40 million in cap space Gene Smith better have his phones charged! (part one)

At 4:00pm est tomorrow the NFL free agency season officially starts. All eyes will be on social media as 1 by 1 free agents will be contacted by teams with offers to sign contracts. Jaguars General Manager Gene Smith will be the man in charge as the Jags pursue potential targets. There is lots of speculation on who is on GM Gene's short list. The positions that need work for the Jags include wide receiver, defensive end and defensive back. That being said there are some potential big names that the Jaguars could go after. Lets take a look at those potential targets.

Mario Williams

Drafted in 2006 the first pick overall Williams has been a defensive beast for the Texans. In his six season career Williams has racked up 53 sacks and a total of 241 tackles. He's spent his career with Texans in their 3-4 defense but played DE in college for North Carolina State. Williams would be the perfect answer to the Jaguars troubles at DE. Having him start opposite a healthy Aaron Kampman (if he isn't released) or Jeremy Mincey would totally revamp and solidify our young defensive line. Williams is a natural born leader and would set the tone for the Rush Men. Williams has been on IR twice in his career. The first time late in the 2010 season with an inflamed hernia and the second in October 2011 with a torn pectoral obtained while sacking Oakland Raiders QB Jason Campbell. Barring any setbacks in his rehab Mario Williams looks to make a healthy comeback this season. Williams would be a welcome addition to Mel Tuckers #6 ranked defense. Fan support for this has been voiced all through twitter and the blogesphere even with fans going so far as to photo shop Williams in a Jaguars jersey and helmet. I don't know about but this looks like it just fits.

Vincent Jackson

Another name that has been in the mix as potential free agents the Jaguars could go after is VJax. He was drafted in the second round 61st overall of the 2005 draft. He stands at 6'5 and weighs in at 230lbs. Think of him as a really fast Tight End with number one receiver written all over him. He has spent his entire career playing for the Chargers. He was franchised by them last season but both sides were never able to reach a long term deal. Rather than franchsing him again and being on the hook for $13.7 million the Chargers will let Jackson test the market. This past season Jackson had 1106 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. VJax could be the answer the Jaguars have been looking for since Jimmy Smith retired. The Jaguars have not had a 1000 yard receiver since Smith retired in 2006. Other than being arrested for a suspended license in March of 2010 Jackson has remained low key with brushes with the law. So unless Gene is that much of a tight wad he would be ideal for the Jags to pursue depending on what price tag comes with him.

Marques Colston

In his 6 seasons in the NFL (same draft class as MJD) Colston has had all but one season where he has had over 1000 yards receivng. Surprisingly he has never been to a Pro Bowl. If the Jaguars were able to sign him and Vincent Jackson it would be Thunder and Lightning 2.0. Some say that Colston has bad knees but stats don't lie. Colston would a great number one recevier for the Jaguars. A nice long term contract is due to him. There was speculation that he would be tagged by the Saints but since they have yet to reach a long term deal with Drew Brees before the start of the tag season Colston will hit the market and Brees got the tag. For a seventh round draft pick, Colston has put up top 10 receiver numbers. His only health set back was a broken thumb he got in 2008 that kept him out for four weeks. At 28 years old Colston still has plenty of gas in the tank and could help the Jags receiver corp reach that next level. I hope that Gene Smith has his number on speed dial.

John Abraham
At 33 and over 10 years in the game John Abraham ranks as one of the best defensive ends to play football.  This four time Probowler is in the 100 sacks club with 111.0 sacks and over 400 tackles. He commands he has future hall of famer written all over him. He would be a great acquisition for the Jaguars in free agency. He's a natural born leader and would bring experience to the D-line. Last year he registered 9.5 sacks. It seems given his age he hasn't lost a step yet. But who knows when he will start to decline. when the season starts he will be 34 and even though he would be a good fit with the Jags he doesn't fit the youth movement that the team has adopted recently.

 Brandon Carr

Recently the Jaguars resigned veteran DB Rashean Mathis to a one year contract worth $5 million. The bulk of the contract is incentive based. Depending on the amount of playing time Mathis gets determines the amount of money he receives. That being said Rashean's time in Jacksonville is limited. At some point the Jaguars will have to replace Mathis. Enter Brandon Car. Drafted in 2008 Carr has had 8 career ints in his 4 year career. He has experience but also comes with room to grow. Carr would be a great addition to the Mel Tucker defense and would work well with secondary coaches Tony Oden and Marlon McCree.

Cortland Finnegan

Cortland Finnegan would actually be an A+ pick up in my opinion for the Jags. His 6 years in the league have been pretty impressive. 473 tackles, 6.0 sacks, and 14 interceptions make him a good pick up and competition for Rashean Mathis. He has had some on the field incidents that have resulted in fines but honeslty if you are a football player in this league and don't get fined at least once then you must be doing something wrong. Finnegan is 28 and has plenty of playing time left. I would be highly surprised if Gene Smith did not go after him.

Pierre Garcon

Coming off the best season of his career, Garcon would be a nice addition to the Jaguars receiver corps. Playing with a Manning-less Colts last season he accumulated 947 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns. Since being drafted in the sixth round of the 2008 draft. Garcon's stats have increased steadily to where he peaked this season. Garcon turned down a $35 million, five year contract offer by the Colts and wants to take a chance and test the free agent market. At 25 he would make for good competition against Mike Thomas and Jarett Dillard. Honestly I think he has more potential than both. He's taller, faster and has better hands. He would be a nice upgrade and could easily get a roster spot over either player. He would be steal if the Jaguars could get him.

This is just part one of this posting. I will post a new article tomorrow on more potential free agent targets that Jaguars might go after.
