Bounties, Tags, and Manning...what does this mean in Jacksonville

Okay lets get right to it. Former Jaguars defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is the subject of an NFL investigation where he was allegedly placing bounties on opposing teams. Williams was supposedly paying players anywhere from $1,000-$8,000 to "take out" offensive players from other teams. This took place during Williams tenure with the New Orleans Saints from 2009-2011. The fallout from this scandal could result in some harsh punishment handed down by the league (I love that show). Williams was defensive coordinator for the Jaguars back in 2008. There has been no indication he implemented a bounty system during his time here but he had a similar bounty system when he was a defensive coach with the Redskins. The bounty system was funded by players and at once was as high as $50,000. A memo sent out to the league with a statement saying that at one point Saints LB Jonathan Vilma came in to the locker room and put $10,000 as a bounty during a playoff game. Players were paid $1000 for a cart off and $1500 for a knockout. Right now Williams is the defensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams. How long will that last? Once question comes to mind is was Jack Del Rio aware of Williams' pay for performance system when he was with the Redskins?

It's also tag season in the NFL. Teams have until Monday to use the franchise tag on players before free agency begins. So far 10 teams have used their tag. The teams and players are as follows:

  1. San Francisco 49ers-DaShon Goldson-Safety
  2. Philadelphia Eagles-Desean Jackson-Wide Receiver
  3. Oakland Raiders-Tyvon Branch-Strong Safety
  4. Atlanta Falcons-Brent Grimes-Cornerback
  5. Washington Redskins-Fred Davis-Tight End
  6. Baltimore Ravens-Ray Rice-Running Back
  7. Chicago Bears-Matt Forte-Running Back
  8. Arizona Cardinals-Calais Campbell-Defensive End
  9. Cincinnati Bengals-Mike Nugent-Kicker
  10. Cleveland Browns-Phil Dawson-Kicker
There is speculation that if the Jags do not reach a deal with Kicker Josh Scobee then the tag will go to him. Scobee's stats the last few years have been phenomenal and the Jags would be foolish to let him go. I want to see Scobee stay and eventually retire as a Jag.

Last night video surfaced of Payton Manning throwing in pads and a helmet at Duke University. Manning was working with Duke head coach David Cutcliffe (Mannings OC when he was at University of Tennessee). The video was confirmed to be authentic. The Colts have until March 8 to exercise a 28 million dollar option on Manning or release him. An AFC South with no Manning won't be the same but as we saw last season it makes for that much less competition. The Colts and Jaguars rivalry is one that has gone on for years. Duval loves to see the Manning Face when the Jags beat the Colts.
