Jags sign Mathis to 1yr deal for 5Mil...cont.

Per Adam Schefter of NFL.com the Jaguars have sign Rashean Mathis to a 1 yr deal worth 5 mil... details to come after I cook dinner....

Cont...

Okay I finished cooking...here's the word....The Jags resigned Mathis today to a 1 year 5 million dollar contract today. Mathis who has spent his entire career with the Jaguars was drafted in the second round of the 2003 NFL draft. Considered one of the better cornerbacks in the NFL Rashean has amassed 498 tackles and 30 interceptions over his 9 year career. Mathis is a home grown member of the Jaguars. He graduated from Englewood High School and then went to Bethune-Cookman University. Last season Mathis reported to training camp in the best shape of his career ready to prove that he was worth an investment by the team with his contract expiring at the end of the season. Yet his season was cut short when he tore his ACL in the Jags at Colts game back in November.

The new contract is supposedly incentive laden which is part of why its worth 5,000,000.00. The team must have faith in his ability to bounce back from the injury and continue his role at CB. It is important to note that the contract is for one year meaning sometime in the near future a new corner back will either be drafted or found in free agency. Mathis will be a welcomed presence on the field that many fans will be happy to see.

With Rashean being the first free agent resigning it leaves me wondering who is going to be next. Gene Smith stated last month that Mathis was a priority as well as Josh Scobee, Jeremy Mincey, and Dwight Lowery. Scobee who was franchised on Monday says he will not sign the tender and will wait for a long term deal with the Jaguars. The Jaguars will have 5 days left tomorrow to resign those players before free agency starts on March 13. I'm hoping to see all of them return as they all were major contributors last season.
